Well you're on a subreddit for the game, so the people on here are going to be skewed higher due to being more invested in the game. This isn't really a great way to find "the truth" but it will definitely confirm your side of the debate.

This exactly. We're not a representation of the average commander by any stretch of the imagination. My estimation is that the average is closer to 1.9 or so, because a lot of people have either 1 or 2 decks (probably more with 1), with a very small minority like us who have >20 decks.

Yeah I’m relatively invested but I don’t keep more than 7 or 8 playable decks at any time, and I’m sure there are plenty of 1 and 2 deck people who bring the average wayyy down.

My thoughts instantly go to the 15 or so friends I have who have absolutely no connection to the community and only play casually with other friends. Most have one deck, a few have two or three, and a few have none because they use their friends’ or just play online. They average close to 1.0 and I’m sure there’s many other friendship-based playgroups like this that fly under the radar and balance the average.

Same boat, personally own 5 playable decks, but the majority of my group; 1 / 2 decks max.

I'd say three to four commander decks. Two Pride and joys One experiment One work in progress

That's accurate for me at least. Two solid decks that I tweak occasionally, one I'm a little afraid to use anymore because it was way too strong last time I used it, One I'm forty percent of the way towards knowing what I'm doing.

I feel like when you start getting into five and up you don't love those decks as much.

Pretty close. Pride and joy Yuriko controlled burn, Casual Breena pillowfight, The Mistake (Vadrik, taking long turns with a lot to track gives me anxiety, but it *is* a decent deck), and a Lazav Copy/Steal with a minor mill/hand-hate subtheme to fuel Lazav's copy effect that's a work in progress.

Hahaha I created a +1/+1 counter deck which was a mistake, it gives me a headache.

Honestly thats almost exactly my decks, you nailed it

This is the way.

I have 12 decks currently that are up to date and are played regularly. I have a 13th deck in the process of being built simply because I have 99% of the cards for it sitting in binders.

So you just need one more card

Correct, I need another heliod suncrowned

>He thinks it's near 1.0 is this a joke? that would mean there are "commander players" who don't even own decks lol personally I have 9 (4 years of playig), slowly builing towards 32

>that would mean there are "commander players" who don't even own decks lol You mean you actually own physical decks? :-\\ Like, made of *paper*?

My wife plays commander with me and her brother on a regular basis. She owns no decks (I mean, technically since we're married, she also owns mine, but not really) and has no interest in building a deck, but enjoys playing.

I play EDH entirely online, via Cockatrice. I have "built" something like 50-300+ decks, depending on how you count them (some are pretty terrible) but don't own a single actual physical card.

wow shit, who thought we'd still have enough trees for paper in 2021, people told us magic woule die and arena is the future

Yeah, he was serious. Insisting it would be somewhere between 1 to 2 bur probably closer to 1. ...even though the 8 players at the table each had 3 decks minimum.... His argument? "A LOT OF PLAYERS DON'T EVEN OWN DECKS"

It's not that crazy of a statement. My group of 6 players has only 2 deck builders / card owners. When we started everyone was in, but the others lost interest in spending the money to keep up with everything coming out so now me and our groups other builder make sure to bring 3 or 4 choices each so everyone can get in on it. They still get to play, I still get to build, win win.

If they don't own a commander deck, then they're not a commander player... Including them in the count seems really odd. I currently have 10 decks and try to keep it around there.

I mean theoretically they could play by only using their friend's decks, but I feel like the number of people that are like that are so minimal that it wouldn't even get close to outweighing the people with 2+ decks.

I have only been playing Commander for about 6 months, and I own 2 decks, and am constantly planning/looking for more in different color combos. Currently my thought is to have 1 5 color, 1 4 color, 1 3 color, etc. etc., but that will probably morph.

Morph decks are really good fun :)

I’m kind of between him and Kenrith for a five color commander. I really like Mitch’s take on Kenrith, but I’m also aware of the commanders reputation.

I know one person that has one deck and that is because they moved sold their entire collection except that one. Every other EDH player I have played with (20+) have at least 4 decks and there are some like me that have 40+ decks.

I think 2-3. This subreddit is way more invested than the average casual player.

36 if you count decks with proxies, 0 if you don't (I'm 15 alright, I can't afford 90% of cards XD)

I'm a multimillionaire and proxy regularly, too. It's ok if you don't want to buy cards. After I was facing down buying 50+$ copies of cards that I already own just to put in decks that I brew, I began selling my collection except for actual collectible pieces. IE: I have full art borderless foils of lots of cards, but I don't bother with anything under 10 dollars. It's much more fun for me to collect as a collector, and to brew freely as a player. When you feel like your ability to enjoy brewing and playing is being limited by financial stress, proxy.

You got birthdays and xmas! Ask for gifts!

I do, but i don't get enough in the way of money to buy enough singles to fuel my decks 😅, especially since i have other things i want too lol (for reference, I get $200 on Christmas from my parents, $15 from my uncles, $15 from my grandparents, $60 on my birthdays from my parents, and $15 from my uncles and grandparents)

I built myself a custom deck box. It will hold 40 decks. Currently I have 9, 60 card standards + 1 Un deck. The other 30 spots are stuffed with EDH decks ranging from a solid 7 to 8 power all the way down to “I’m not even sure if there’s 100 cards in here”. I have several decks that I have time and money invested in that I will never take apart. The other 25 are fair game. My strategy definitely does not make for the strongest decks given that I have my power spread out across so many. I think I just have an addiction for building decks 🤷‍♂️

Got a picture of that deck box? Sounds unwieldy lol

https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/r33qnw/lets_talk_about_card_storage_what_do_you_use_here/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Disregard not having pics, I found this one. It has a picture of what used to be our old kitchen table. I modified it a little bit and turned it into a coffee table. A very very heavy coffee table. My deck box is also in the picture. The black one is the gift I built for my neighbor. https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/oxf977/wondering_if_there_is_a_market_for_custom_deck/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

It is ridiculously heavy lol. Mine was not built to be pretty. My son and I play quite a bit so it does work well to keep in a single spot. If I’m going to go somewhere and play, I pick a couple and leave the behemoth at home. I don’t have pictures of mine, but I did post a very similar one that I built for my neighbor. I will post the link for it.

Dang, yeah that looks heavy duty. Very cool!

Thank you, I appreciate that. My wife doesn’t but it’s good to know someone thinks it’s cool 😂

I mean yeah, it’s stylish, not gaudy, what’s not to like? Are you still looking into doing commissions with that sort of thing?

38 I am taking no questions

For every player that has 20 decks, you need a lot of players with one to get back even close to an avrg. of 1 so I think the real number is a lot higher as a few players with a very high number will bump the avrg. a lot. I currently have 7 if you include decks with proxies or 4 if you only count decks without

Everyone I know owns a ton of them. Right now, I'm sitting at 11 active decks, but realistically only play 6 of them on the regular. I have many half-built decks too, which are decks that I harvested cards from to build new decks. Probably like another 6 husks of decks laying around.

I have 4. It would be interesting to see data on this!

I've been playing since summer, I think, and I currently own 7 EDH decks and I'm working on 3 or 4 more. Love the format. I love building around all these interesting and cool commanders.

Too many. 11? How am I ever gonna play with 11 commander decks?

I have 6 which I feel is the perfect amount (2 high powered, 2 mid powered, 2 low powered)

I think there's an important distinction to make here. Is the question "how many decks, on average, does a commander player have," or, "how many commander decks does the average player have". If it's the first, there are many of us who own 20+ decks, which would highly skew the results. If 20 players have only one deck, and I have 20+, that average is over 2 decks a person. So I think the overall average would land in the 3-4 range. On the other hand, if it's the second question, then the AVERAGE PLAYER probably owns around 2 decks, as us high rollers are not the AVERAGE player. So semantics matter a bit in this question imo

I’ve never, in all my years of playing commander, knowingly met someone that only had one deck, except people who just started playing. Personally I currently have 8 in active rotation, which is probably a little higher than average, but there’s just no way it’s as low as ‘closer to 1 than 2, like your friend believes.’

I used to have 15 but have since trimmed WAY down to 5.

I have like 42. My buddy owns like 35 and my other buddy owns like 12. Then again, we are super enfranchised players (we’ve played MTG since ‘94) so take that with a grain of salt.

I have 22, slowly working towards 32.

I have 12-13 but some are on the chopping block. Personally, in my play group and at my LGS I don't see many folks with less than 5 decks.

I have 8 built at all times and maybe a dozen half complete on my desk. My friends have 14, 3, 4, 6decks each if you want more data points.

Since 2007-ish my number of decks built at any given time has varied wildly, but is currently at 16. I've had as few as 2 at one point. Once all my decks in progress are complete I'll have 33.

I have 22 and enjoy playing all of them except 2 which I will take apart soon. My roommate and I play a lot so our decks all see some play. More than others but that’s to be expected. I tend to lean more toward the Dimir, Rakdos, Simic commanders.

I've got 15. Planning to trim it down under 10

13 here, been playing for a little over a year and a half. Got like 3 more decks in mind I want to build.

I disassembled 4 decks last weekend, so now I only have 14 left. And 3 more finished decklists I have almost all the actual cards for. And 2 more piles that are slowly becoming decks. And 2 precons. I may have a problem.

Nah, don't worry, that's not a problem, a problem was having 40 decks but only 14 Sol Rings.

I've been buying all the precons for about a year. I may have a problem and it certainly isn't a lack of Sol Rings.

8... But give me some more time and I may turn that number sideways ∞

My friends, who don't play Magic regularly and/or aren't as invested in this game as I and other members of my regular playgroup are, tend to have 2-3 EDH decks. Mostly Precons and things build from the cards that we, the more enfranchised players, gave them (for example Ixalan Merfolk cards, that they really liked playing with during a draft-night). They don't need more decks then 2 or 3, because they only ever play Magic when we enfranchised players host a Draft OR we simply come together to spend some enjoybale time over a few rounds of EDH (like you would over a boardgame). One deck gets boring to play, so they opt for a second and/or third one. For example: One friend has Ezuri, Claw of Progress and Oloro; another one has Meren, Ur-Dragon and Yidris; another one plays Kumena and Saskia... In this subreddit I would argue that the avergae is around 6-8 decks, with some players like myself only having four decks, while others aim for the full 32.

I have like 20 something that I built and then 5 or so sleeved precons

I have like 9

I have 4 and changing between several for one permanent addition, playing EDH since 2008.

26 don’t have a goal number tbh I want to cut it back if anything

I'd argue the average commander player has 2-3 decks. I know a lot of folks have 20+, I also know a lot of folks with 5> My own groups data: 12, 10, 15, 1, 1, 3, 2, and myself 8 (about to be 10 after Christmas)

The average player, I could say 3-5 ish. People that play regularly at my LGS, I'd say easily 6 or more. Newer players or younger players maybe one or two. Personally I have 2 waiting that i lost desire to built for right now (both commander 2020 decks) 1 I'm about to work on. And just finished my third deck since strixhaven. Bringing my total to I believe 16 since I rarely take apart a deck or build one I don't enjoy playing. So the average being 1 is impossible but if you have a group of new players or young players without the dispensable income, then 1 is possible.

My main playgroup ranges wildly. I have a total of eight, one friend has double that, several have three.

I have three. A goofy experiment, a fast draingain, and a gift for a friend

I'm gonna guess the average is somewhere between 1 and 3 I have 11 with 2 more brewing

I feel like most of the people that I've played against at my LGS's Commander nights usually have at least 3-5. Usually the only people I see with only 1 deck are brand new players, and/or super casual/occasional players. Maybe that's not the most representative sample, but I'm not sure why your friend would think that most people only have 1.

I’ve been playing magic for 15 years. I’ve had many many decks in modern and EDH throughout my life and it’s helped me settle on the play styles, colors and cards I like to use. I’ve got 6 decks now that fall under the “I will never take this apart, only upgrade/tune” category. At my LGS I usually get to play all 6 decks at least once and I enjoy the hell out of every single one of them. In order of them being built, here are my decks and their “power levels.” [[Zedruu, the Greathearted]] - 6 [[Tuvasa, the Sunlit]] - 8 [[Atla Palani, Nest Tender]] - 8 [[Tatyova, Benthic Druid]] - 8 [[Xenagos, God of Revels]] - 6/7 [[Edgar Markov]] - 6 Let me know if anyone’s interested in a list!

Show me that Lit chick! I think my Tuvasa sits around 5-6.

Here it is! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TCvRhfi3o0eDCZTWkEb9vw I’ve since added [[On Thin Ice]] and [[Words of Wind]]. Still waiting for a [[Stony Silence]] to come my way. I’ll update it maybe tonight or tomorrow!

Ah yes, it's close but definitely runs a few big bombs that I don't, such as \[\[Replenish\]\], and has some more efficient lands. Have you thought about running \[\[Greater Good\]\] + \[\[Ominous Seas\]\] + \[\[Lab Man\]\] as a finisher combo? I've found I'm usually happy to have the two enchantments regardless, since being able to sac a fat Tuvasa for 15 cards is just handy. Edit: I just noticed no \[\[Enchanted Evening\]\] sorcery package either? What are your main win cons?

So I already have a deck that wins by drawing out and I didn’t want to have any decks that could win the same way, aside from combat damage. That’s where Words of Wind comes in! I bounce cheap enchantments back to my hand and recast them while my opponents just have to bounce permanents. It kinda uses the mechanic of drawing out my deck but with some limitations. I tend to stay away from infinites but I’m not opposed to “I’m going to win right now” types of things. Also [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]] is a bomb that makes me happy so that’s why it’s in there lol

Hahah I win with [[Aura Thief]] and Enchanted Evening, bouncing everyone’s permanents back to their hands with [[Words of Wind]] or just unblockable Tuvasa and token beats.

So in my group where we all play Commander, we have one person with 67 decks, one person with 30 something decks, another with around 10-15 decks, I have 8 decks (9 if you count the precon I just got for Christmas but plan on tearing apart soon), one guy has 9 decks, another has like 4-5 decks, one has 4 decks, one has 2 decks, and we have one person who only has one deck. Hope that gives you some good data. So that averages out to around 18 decks per person, or 7 if you take out the 2 outliers who have way more than the rest of the group.

I personally have 4 decks currently, but have had at most 11 fairly recently. Just been focusing more on quality over quantity lately. I do have a friend who literally buys every commander precon that comes out, and keeps them intact to play with, only occasionally swapping out a card or two. So he has quite a lot haha

11. But I’ll build a weak deck for fun.

hmmmmm... I have 11 decks.

I'll give decks #s for every player in my group. Me 10, the others 5, 1, 1, 4, 3, 3, 4.

Right now I have 11 with two more currently in the works

Started May this year, 4 active decks, 1 I’m building, 4 precons that I took apart to build other decks, and 5 unopened Ikoria precons from the Amazon sale.

I have 20+ decks.

The number of decks the average player owns would be integer and would really be a median, but the average of decks that all EDH players own would be a different figure

I personally own three that are ready to be played with, and am working on a 4th. To be fair though, up until about a month ago I only owned one, but I didn't really consider myself a commander player. I just recently got into commander from kitchen table magic. I built one to play it with friends who enjoy the format and have been sucked in due to my (already enjoying magic) obsessive personality. Plus I'm an adult (in age not so much mind) so I have access to some money to throw at making cheap ish decks.

I have 13 right now. I had no idea it was so many.

42 I also working on 3 others

I have 5 working on another. I'm trying to get a bunch of different color combinations and play styles. Right now I'm trying for reanimator and I already have tribal, spell slinger, big bodies, +1/+1 counters, and voltron.

I’m have 10 decks, been playing for about 3-4 years. I have friends that started this year with anywhere from 2-5 decks. One of my friends has been playing since around 2013 and has like 15+ decks

I have 4 built, 1 that will be "done" when the rest of the cards show up, 1 that's close, and one very much a wip. One of my buddies has 6 I think. A couple other friends have multiple decks for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if there are players with only one deck, like an upgraded precon. But here it will likely skew higher, given that players engaging on Reddit are far more engaged than the super casual kitchen table players we hear about.

Here is the data for our playgroup: 2 players with 2 Decks 2 players with 3 Decks One Player with currently 12 Decks, but he is brewing a lot of New Decks and the number of Decks will rise in the future. I have 5 Decks, but am aiming for 10 Decks (1 for each two-color combination) Then we have also 3 players without an Decks, who use Decks of others, because they are new to the game and only have Player a couple of games so for. My guess is most players only have like two or three Decks they own and play on a regular Basis. But there are a few who like deckbuilding/invest in the game/Do the 32 challenge etc and These players raise the Anfrage to something like 4 or 5 probably

Let me try to count em up. Sythis Dragons Slivers Chatterfang Brokkos Sythis part 2 where I swap out 17 cards and it becomes a whole other thing I have most of a godo deck but pulled it apart as I wasn't using it I have most of a vampire deck except I forgot to get an edgar markov so might ditch the red and go for a WB vampire deck but haven't built it yet. I have a lot of peices for a zombie deck, I think I would need to pick up maybe 10 cards including a commander to have it ready to go. So 5 right now that I can play with but another 4 or 5 in various stages of completion. I have the peices to turn brokkos into an infect deck or run atraxa infect with brokkos as secret commander but a lot of people hate infect so haven't bothered putting that together yet

I play very regularly with only 2 decks, currently working on money for my third. Theyre mid tier but just fun to play with lots of ways to get solutions in dire times. My friend I play the most with usually keeps 3 decks built and two decks in progress but rotates commanders often.

I have about 5, only two of which are complete and playable in their current states

Not enough.

~20 for me.

I have 7. I had 10-13 for years. It slowly creeps upwards every year ever since I sold almost all my collection 4 years ago, telling myself that 3 decks was enough. LOL I was a fool.

20 for myself, and my wife has about 8. I would figure the average consistent player has around 5, as opposed to everyone who bought a precon, played it once or twice, and left it on a shelf.

I have lots of lists online, but only have 4 built at one time, at varying power levels. I have my high power combo deck, 5c partners deck, simic thief deck, and Jund stompy deck built currently. I maintain and keep all lists online, and rotate them when I wanna play others. It's an all-in thing for me though; if I'm changing decks, I'm changing all of the decks at once. This is because lists share cards and I wanna make sure I have everything without having to strip one deck to build another.

I have 12.

22. Updating based on cards form new sets sucks. I will take a few apart from time to time, but always end up building others. I put a hard cap on 22, since I hate sharing cards between decks. That means multiple copies. Upside is that each deck doesn't have the exact same staples in there.

8 built and played. Because that’s 4 Boulders per Arkhive, and i have 2 Arkhives. Many more brewed online.

I have 8 total. This is over the course of a few years. 3 are completely proxy decks, the other 5 are 95% real with a few proxies here and there. Here are my decks: Volo simic value with token populating Kykar spellslinger Millicent spirit tribal Neyith big fight everything Tymna and Ikra lifegain Erebos sacrifice devotion Karametra landfall deck Alesha reanimator combo

I’d say most people have 5 or less decks. My friends have 1 and I have like almost 10 I have other friends like me, as someone else said they are just more invested. I’d say that the normal average not heavily into magic person has 1-5 decks. But if we look at people like us on the subreddit I’m pretty sure a good portion of us have nearly 10 decks. It’s hard to not when people keep posting such cheap and effective decks from new sets.

Built and own are two very different questions. With the recent explosion in precon decks, most of which drop to about $30 after a couple months I can easily see the average number being at around 2-3. I can easily see anyone who isn't brand new to the format getting 1-2 precons over the course of their first year. My group of friends introduced EDH to two Non magic playing friends in 2021 and they each own 4+ precons. We are all childless adults with disposable income so that is likely higher than the norm. Built decks I can see being less than 1. As the most casual people will be comfortable with only owning precons for their whole time playing the game and never building a deck from scratch.

I currently have 5

Lockdown ballooned my total out to about 15-16 playable decks. I'd say most people I play with have between 2 and 4 decks

At my highest I had 26. Currently at 22.

Currently at 17. I have 4 that are built but will be deconstructed at some point. Still working on that magic number of 32 for every color combo. All decks have proxies in them because i'm not trying to spend $60 on one fetchland when I can order full playsets of all of them and the true duals for way less that.

I'm working on my 4th. My issue is that I want each of my decks to be as unique as possible but also interesting and fun to me. As I keep building, I find it harder and harder to to actually put my lists into paper. In my first 3 months, I had 2 decks built. It took me 6 months to build my 3rd. and now I'm here a year and a half later finishing a 4th. Does this mean I'll build my 5th in 3 years?

I keep about 10 in "ready to play" shape. I have another 6-8 that are in various states of breaking down / putting back together. Two of the guys in my group are more casual. They have 3-4 ready to go. Not counting pre-cons. I'd think the average player would have 2-4.

Pretty sure only 1 of the EDH players I know has 1 deck. Everyone else has at least 3, and a good number have even more. I have 13.

I am not average. I have 260 (not counting un-edited PreCons). I have played with highly invested players who only have 1 or 2.

I have 34 with 4-5 in various stages of being built.

Yeah, I'm definitely not average. I have 25 decks currently and I just got the cards in today to finish my V1 build of \[\[Drizzt\]\], so very soon to be 26......and 3 more already in the pipeline....Yeah, I have a problem

[Drizzt](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/4/6/46e3259e-93c2-48c0-8b96-835cdb883383.jpg?1627708841) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Drizzt%20Do%27Urden) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/afr/220/drizzt-dourden?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/46e3259e-93c2-48c0-8b96-835cdb883383?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/drizzt-dourden) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Here are some more numbers for your average (complete decks only): I have 6. Spouse has 4. Friends have 58, 17, and 3.

I usually keep around 3 built at a time, but I could potentially have around 10 if I wanted. I just like collecting staples for the format

I’ve been at this for only 3-4 years and I have 9 finished decks. So unless you’re counting commander players with *no* commander decks, it’s gonna be way higher than 1.

Between 20 and 30, can't really tell anymore.

I have 13 and my wife has 12. We love deck building. Most of my friends that play have at least 5 EDH decks. Having only one would get boring pretty quick.

To use my play group as a sample size. (5 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 6) / 8 = 3.5 so there’s a data point for you. This is a mixed bag of players who predominantly play commander with one player starting in Kamigawa, 2 starting in Origins, 2 starting around Kaladesh, and the rest starting the past year

I currently have 12 decks. Two of them are more or less dumb jokes I haven't brought myself to disassemble rather than decks I play, and two more have basically been retired to "loaner status" for new players.

I currently only have 3 decks, and have kept that number since April 2021. Back in 2019 I had 5 decks that were mostly jank. Over the last couple of years I reduced the number of decks I have in order to get better cards for each one. Magic is expensive, and unfortunately I just don’t have the money to invest I all of the decks I would like it. If I had my way, I’d own somewhere between 8 and 10 decks, but I just don’t have the funds for that. Really hoping to make deck #4 sometime soon though

I would think the average would be 5-6. I have 24 decks right now but I have been buying a box minimum of every set since I started in scars of mirrodin. I just enjoy making decks out of what I have vs buying singles

I own seven. Three of them are decks I made, four of them are precons I keep around because I thought they were neat or if I'm in lower power games.

Since the pandemic I have building non stop. Up to 62

Was his argument the average COMMANDER players commander deck count is close to 1.0 or the average MAGIC players commander deck count is close to 1.0? If it is specifically commander players I think there's no way it's below a 3 since about 1 in 10 people I've played with are deck goblins like me who have 20+ decks. So if one person has 20 and the other 9 have 1 each you get a 2.9, and surely someone else in the group has a second deck to make it an even 3. If he's talking about people who play magic in general but not commander and adding them into the pool then you might get a significantly smaller number that could be closer to 1.

I have 23 in paper

Too many when we're carrying them, and not enough when we sit down.

I'm the wrong person to ask...

The honest answer is probably 1 or 2, if the person has invested enough money to have more than two commander decks they aren't an average player anymore imo.

The data gathered here will be *way* too high. But I have 9

I have 12 currently, but 4 of them I need to fix.

I'd say average is between 1 and 2, with mode being 1 and median being 3.

There are 2 answers imo: 1. The average decks for people is most likely 2 - 3 2. The average redditor here most likely has 4-6. I have 10 but as said above, Reddit is not representative of the average and casual player. The average/casual player most likely aren't even using this regularly, I am think more hard-core players do

One deck been playing for five years when I want to build a new one I take the old one apatt

That one guy on YouTube who's made and kept a deck for every legal commander printed to date has to drive up the average at least a little. He's our own Spiders George

I own 12 so far. I’ve got some other decks I want to build but lazy and $$ to build them.

I have 13. All pretty much budget tho

16 decks atm

12 Collective playgroup...18

4 for me. 3 precons, with some manipulation from how it shipped. And a [[Tovolar, dire overlord]] that i assembled because i pulled some sexy wolves and werewolves from the innistrad bundles.

[Tovolar, dire overlord](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/f/9/f953fad3-0cd1-48aa-8ed9-d7d2e293e6e2.jpg?1637114341)/[Tovolar, the Midnight Scourge](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/back/f/9/f953fad3-0cd1-48aa-8ed9-d7d2e293e6e2.jpg?1637114341) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=tovolar%2C%20dire%20overlord%20//%20tovolar%2C%20the%20midnight%20scourge) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mid/246/tovolar-dire-overlord-tovolar-the-midnight-scourge?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f953fad3-0cd1-48aa-8ed9-d7d2e293e6e2?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/tovolar-dire-overlord-//-tovolar-the-midnight-scourge) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

I have around 25 decks, 34 if you include precons I haven’t gotten around to upgrading much at all. 45 if you include ones I have in digital form only. …I might be addicted I dunno

I have 18. I keep my best/most valuable 6 in my backpack along with one that I am tuning for the week. Four are sitting at home because I either need to work on them or take them apart. The rest are at my lgs in a secure locker. Those decks are lower powered to play with newbies and strangers and to be available whenever I stop by and have some time to kill. I have all 5 mono-colored and 5 two-color. I have two 3-color, and the rest are a mishmash of whatever in 1-3 colors.

Well its definitely not less than one. Lol. I would say a large percentage has one but if they actually stick with the game and play for a year its REALLY easy to talk yourself into buying that second one. I'd say average is more like 1.75 to 2.25

It depends on what you define as an EDH player. For example, until recently, I used my friend's decks when playing since I would only ever play EDH with him, and even then I would only play like twice a month. I have finally built my own deck tho, but that's still only one deck that I own. But besides the people like past me who play paper Magic but borrow decks and don't own any, there are also plenty of people who play Magic online, and some of them probably don't own any physical decks (hence why they play MTG online). So yeah, would you include these two groups as EDH players or not? Are you specifically talking about paper Magic? And how often does someone have to play to qualify - cuz if the answer to this is like once a month, then you're gonna get a lot of people who borrow decks, but if the answer is on a weekly basis, then most people are gonna own 5+ decks.

I have 5. I have a carrying case that holds 5 decks and my box of dice/tokens. My rule for myself is I can't expand past the box.

40 is definitely on the high end I would.thi k and one is the lowest. I'd say on average between four to ten for most people.

I would say 2. It depends tho. Some of my friends and myself included have like 4 or 5. Some have 2 - 3. Some just have 1 super stacked deck. Depends

Currently at a *totally* healthy +20. I play a ton of different tribes and I like to have one of each of the more popular mechanic builds. That said my newest work in progress is [[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash]].

[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/e/a/ead8a1f5-6260-47fa-a649-43711ec5bbeb.jpg?1608911265) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Yurlok%20of%20Scorch%20Thrash) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmr/293/yurlok-of-scorch-thrash?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ead8a1f5-6260-47fa-a649-43711ec5bbeb?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/yurlok-of-scorch-thrash) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

I would say 3-4 with one favorite. Myself I own 14 decks I am a bit of an outlier

I would say that the average player would likely have 4. Sure many have only 1-2 decks but most players I find at the LGS have at least 5 and often more than 10.

I keep ten, but I've built more. Not like the mono-hounds who have like 40 decks, I invest in mine long-term and make them good. The bag I carry only has room for six boxes, so I can only field so many at a time and I already have a tough time choosing my lineup. Whenever I breach ten, I wind up naturally dismantling or gifting one of my older ones, either to share in the awesome or scavenge for four-figure returns. It's generally so profitable I'm able to build two new decks from the parts, and they wind up being better than the original.

I've been playing since 2014 and I just finished my 38th deck. The number has this funny habit of just getting bigger.

Started in 2009 and have 18 full decks and 4 partials in progress

I have have 10 that can be built and ready if I wanted i have 6 being played right now and 4 being worked on.

Depends on how long they’ve played. I started off with one, then has two, and probably stayed around 4 for a while. I can fit about ten in my bag so I had around that much for a while but with covid I’m easily over 20 now

Ive never met someone with just one deck that has played for any period of time...

I've actually had the same conversation with the owner of the LGS I frequent and they believe it to be around 7,5 decks per player.

I own a total of 18 but I only built 5 of them and actively use 3. The rest are mostly precons that I got in case I felt the wind of flavour shift blowing

I think it is far less than one if you count all people in the world including those who don't play and have zero decks however since you said the average player I think it would be slightly more than one? I've got nine almost 10 and my wife has nine so together we have 18 almost 19 and we eventually plan to get the full 32 split 16 and 16 so there's that and I don't think anybody should have more than 32 because why would you ever have two decks of the same color identity?

I would say 5 for your average player. 2 precons, 2 fairly solid ones, and 1 experimental. Some other players have around 11 though

I have 5

1 edh deck, 4 kitchen table

I have 10-15 (I regularly take decks apart and build new ones, so no hard number). My friends all have 5-10 decks (one exception is a couple who recently got into magic and only got 3 decks each).

On the road to 32 edh decks, currently built 14, regularly play and tweak 12. Also I have a pauper deck and plan to build more at some point

2. Edh decks 1 modern 1 standard

I own 8, but I am heavily invested in the game. My brothers are not as invested in the game. If we only talk about commander decks and not the very casual toolkit decks we used to play. Then one brother have 1 deck and the other has 4 (all precons) The average player might own around 1-3 decks.

Fourteen. Ten unaltered precons. And four big boy decks in various states of me being satisfied with them.

33 plus 6 under construction

Ive got 4 decks, give or take a thousand if you count all the decklists Ive built but not purchased...

I do own currently around 40 decks, with maybe another 10 or so that were assembled at some point but are not in my collection. Overall, i try to keep decks to a certain power level, so the vast majority is less than 100 Euro, but i have decks that are very expensive due to rare cards like Tabernacle, Wheel of Fortune, Timetwister, Gaeas Cradle, Mishras Workshop and stuff like that

If most players have 1 deck the average has to be higher than that

I have 10. I have several friends who have 0-3. I'm the odd one out at that number

I have about 40 at the moment, but that's fast from normal. I'd guess the average is somewhere around 2.

I have 11. Only one of them would me considered too powerful to play against unmodded precons

Im currently at 11 3 pride and joys - mono red and mono black 2 wips 6 - $25 budget decks

I have 11 if you include the secret lair coin flip thing I preordered. I only regularly rotate between 3 or 4 of my decks. Most of my playgroup has 2-3 decks that I’ve seen and there is one person In my group that only has one deck at a time but he has the largest collection among us. He will build a deck and then retire it after a few weeks so he can disassemble it and build a new deck.

I have 5. I only build another if I deconstruct one. I try to constantly upgrade and optimize the decks I have and I wouldn't be able to do that with more

I think it depends how you count. Is someone who only plays when his friends who are way more into magic asks them to join like once or twice a year, but would never take initiative to play by himself a commander player? Is my sister who I bought a precon for and thought to play, but hasn't played since, but could at any time join a game now that she knows the rules and has a deck a commander player? Is my wife who has played the game quite a few times with my cards, including commander games, but owns no cards of her own a commander player? Is my friend who used to play a LOT of magic, and had like 10 commander decks, but who quit magic and sold all his cards three years ago a commander player? If no, what if he joins me for a commander night and borrows a deck, is he then a commander player again, for how long does he then stay a commander player without owning any cards until he is again just a former commander player. And, again in the last example, if he IS a commander player, even though he sold his collection and haven't played in three years. Does that mean everyone who has ever played commander is always a commander player? Or is there an "enfranchised threshold" you have to reach. Personally I have 10. But most of my playgroup have 2 - 4 decks each
