What is the purpose of this on my decanter? It would just spill if it opened after filled?

It’s a jigger

just_some_dude_blah

still the question remains, whats the purpose of this thing?

Luke-A-B

It’s a jigger, used to measure out 1.5 oz or sometimes 2oz (the size of a drink) of whatever you have in the decanter.

ttwixx

Yes but if you do it this way it just spills

DaYooper

There's no point to whiskey decanters in general except to look pretty.

acvdk

I think it doesn’t look usable though. Like if you did what the OP is doing you would just spill everywhere. If you took it off first you would need a tiny funnel as the opening is quite small.

slawpdawg

Can you take it off and pour into it like a shot glass?

Xen26k

No it’s a very tight hole to pour into.

[deleted]

I think you take it off first.

FloorManager

Maybe to get the last bit out? Waste not want not.

clathekid

It's cheaper to make things hollow than solid.

Theeasy6

This the answer

atxbikenbus

Yep. Also easier too since its "blown" not cast they can use the same process for both the lid and decanter.

clathekid

Got a flair for blowing champ !?

exonautic

It's probably exactly an oz or oz and a half.

GreatCornolio

You won't know until you try

DanJayTay

I would assume to catch the dregs, so when you have the last drams worth you put it upside down to catch all the last drops?

ditto_97

Cheaper to make hollow or it's a shot glass of 1-1.5 oz is what I'd say

Seanathan26

Because it’s not meant to do that. Just a hollow glass top.

Public-Fig5044

Because if it was solid it would be heavier

takeshiCovac

I think it is a way of measuring out a single shot.

Xen26k

Yeah I was probably drunk when I made this thread.. obviously if you open it it’ll spill out lol 😂 Anyways the opening is quite small and you couldn’t pour directly into the hole.. on your own at least.
