Holy fucking shit… so just have to hop on and put this out there: When I was 20 wks pregnant we found out my son had spina Bifida and one of the main concerns with this condition is hydrocephalus! So at 24 WEEKS GESTATION (24 weeks old in my uterus still) doctors were able to slice me open, pull his butt/lower back out of me, proceed to stuff his spinal cord back into him and patch him up, THEN shove him back into me and I carried him until my c-section at 33 weeks pregnant.
Just absolutely mind blowing that this picture is what kids had to endure and now they have this surgery that has an amazing success rate in reducing or eliminating this problem!
Just to add on to your comment to make sure there is no confusion. Hydrocephalus isn’t only caused by spina bifida. There are a number of potential causes. Happy things worked out for you and your baby!

This is false and perpetuates the horrible practice of blaming the parents for disabilities. There are multiple different causes for Spina Bifida. Some are related to the mom's diet, but not all types are preventable.
God had a beautiful plan for your baby and then you fucked it all up

Just taking that whole conservative talking point all the way home to show how ridiculous it is
I save a little praise for the unseen hand, but definitely give the lion's share to the doers. Thanks for sharing your wild story, hopefully the baby is doing wonderfully
No. Hydrocephaly is a condition where fluid builds up in the brain in utero, and as the skull forms it becomes larger than a normal skull. It's treatable with modern medical tech but back then was almost always fatal for both foetus and mother ☹️
This is a very extreme example of hydrocephaly
I remember being in hospital once, and they wheeled someone ing with, what we used to call, water on the brain, his head looked triple the size of ours I never seen it before, and have not since, I was so shocked, and confused as to how he had survived for so long, if you take into account I am 50 now , an was about 22/23 back then.
Mars attacks was shit, to say the multiple actors involved, it was at best ok. Now I would have paid good money to see unedited behind screen footage!

Given that it says the skull was from a fetus, likely it died in utero but was delivered surgically because there was no other way to pass this kind of miscarriage at the time. Then it was probably donated to science after the fact
I met someone once that had hydrocephaly, he was a bit younger than I am right now (I'm 27, he should've been around 21~23). He was living at a care facility for the ones with more necessity, and the institution kept afloat due to charities.
His head was proportionally this big, and he simply couldn't walk right, had to be moved by wheelchair. While his mind developed, it was at a much reduced rate. He probably had the maturity of a 9~11 yo
A pretty sad situation all around, but to the point: yes, there are people with heads like that
In case anyone is wondering, this is an extreme case.
Source: I have hydrocephalus, wasn’t diagnosed until I was 13 and my head doesn’t look anything like that
There was a girl on the msn baby boards 15 years ago who was pregnant with a baby who was diagnosed with this around 14 weeks. It was so extreme and his head just kept filling up with fluid and growing. She was stressed (obviously) and would post the ultrasound photos, looking for support or maybe hope that someone else had experienced the same with positive results. Her progress was the last thing other people pregnant at the same stage should be following but I think so many of us couldn't look away. Eventually the fetus died before 20 weeks and she had to have a d&c.
I have since experienced a missed miscarriage and spent a week knowing I was carrying around a dead fetus before my body realized and started the process to expel it (my choice, I was holding out hope the doctors were wrong.) I am so angry that there are legislators and people who support them who would now make that girl carry the baby dead around after weeks of trauma, unable to get it out.
I also experienced a missed miscarriage at 17 weeks gestation. However, I chose an abortion over having labor induced. I had already delivered one son via c-section after a failed induction, and I didn't want to face the possibility of going through that only to fail. Nor could I stand the possibility that the only child I might give actual birth to would be a dead one. My abortion was performed 2 days after we were given the news, 3 days after we had lost our baby.
My heart breaks for any woman who has her options limited by legislators and voters who have never been in this position, and who do not understand how traumatizing and potentially deadly it can be. My doctor was very clear that we needed to move quickly, or I could risk sepsis, infertility, and death. Many states with restrictive abortion laws require that a woman be septic before they can intervene. Septic shock has a mortality rate of 40%. Between 750,000 and 1 million pregnancies end in miscarriage or still birth each year in the US. Not all of these require surgical intervention, though the numbers are significant enough to demonstrate how vast the impact of restrictive abortion law can be; particularly in the event of a nationwide ban. Abortion is Healthcare.
I am deeply sorry for your loss and the girl whose story you shared. Thank you for sharing these stories with us. It's important now, more than ever, that we speak about our truth.
I had a great uncle (my grandma's older brother) who was born with what I would assume was mild or moderate hydrocephaly but it worsened gradually. This was around 1910 and there weren't any options for my great grandparents 😞 and he passed away at age 5.
My husband and I went to this museum on our honeymoon. It was so interesting and disturbing, and I think our jaws were on the ground the whole time. I liked the room full of different irregular organs. "baby look!! EYES !!"

Wow! I didn’t know spina bifida is treatable in this day and age. Medicine is wild.
It's actually preventable if you take enough folic acid before or at the very beginning of pregnancy.
This is false and perpetuates the horrible practice of blaming the parents for disabilities. There are multiple different causes for Spina Bifida. Some are related to the mom's diet, but not all types are preventable.
That part I know. I didn’t know that there was anything you could do after the fact once the condition set in.
Except for those damn vacccines meant to kill us Edit - I considered using /s but thought it would not be needed - Seems I was wrong
Yeah, polio ain’t that bad!!!!
Exactly .. I dont even know anyone who has even had it
because they're all vaccinated lol
Ahh … now this all makes sense

No I completely agree! And then people had the audacity to thank sky daddy instead of the actual doctors and teams of people who made it happen.
I save a little praise for the unseen hand, but definitely give the lion's share to the doers. Thanks for sharing your wild story, hopefully the baby is doing wonderfully
He is thank you!
What does this mean exactly? Did someone actually live for a period of time with a head like that?

Oh, sad. The eye and jaw looked adult size to me. I’m clearly not an expert in such things though.
I regret not including anything in the pic for scale, it's a bit smaller than a bowling ball maybe?
Crazy to think of child birth in early times, I wonder if the mother lived.
No, the mother very probably would have died. She would have been unable to pass the baby and would have probably bled to death or died of infection.
It the mothers pelvis imprinted into the top of the skull?

Having said that, Mars Attacks is much more entertaining

Or probably the mother died too.

I had no idea. That’s crazy.

Yes it's a very extreme case. There were a whole bunch of hydrocephalic skulls in the museum and was the most extreme by a long way

I’m surprised nobody mentioned anything about the mom. Poor thing probably didn’t make it.
And died in horrible pain. Probably while being told not to make such a fuss.
This is the first thing I thought.
It has 🦷
Yeah a foetus develops teeth quite early but they don't come through the gums until after birth
Uhhhh ohhhh!!! Someone took out their camera and broke the rules. Shame on you! Just kidding. I couldn’t help myself. I did the same thing.
