Jason Momoa has islander uncle energy irl. I met him at a convention as a kid (fan of Stargate) and I may as well have been his niece. Very nice guy.
Truth, we all love him in Hawaii. He’ll be driving around the north shore in an old lifted yota just like everyone else blasting his music. He looks out for our community. Hard not to love the guy.
Ayyyy! Maui representing
My brother met him at a bar during a convention. Jason sat next to my brother and his fiance. Just sat and talked, that's all. Shot the shit. Eventually the word got out Jason Mamoa was at x bar and the bar got swamped. My brother wished him well and left. He's a cool dude. Gave my brother a signed poster after a few minutes of normal conversation.
I love the story where he'd just been cast as Aquaman and a journalist asked him if he could swim. He just smiled and said "Bro. I'm Hawaiian".
I grew up with a lot of Polynesians, most Samoans outside of Samoa. I totally get that uncle energy!
Grew up in Australia, and one of my best mates was a Samoan named PJ. During our graduation, there was a decent amount of applause for everyone receiving their certificates, as you'd expect. Then PJ got called up, and I kid you not, the entire graduating year of like 800 students ROARED as he went up. Everyone in the school loved that dude, but our year especially, as we just spent the past 5 years with him.
Our friend group had hired a limo for the after-graduation formal, but we got screwed over by the company. You know PJ did? He got his family's mini-van, decked it out in fairy lights, and had his sister drive us to the formal. All while blaring Queen.
How are you, cuz?
My family friends were Samoan with the grandpa being the one actually from there. I've never met a more pleasant joyous genuine man. Cancer took him real slow in the end. It was awful seeing such a big personality crushed like that.
Took me a hot second to process what you meant by islander uncle for some reason and I was just like "are uncles that are fans of the Islanders better people or something?"
Don’t worry. Somehow my brain processed it as Icelander 😭
I’m still not sure what he means lol.
Does he mean like Tito from Rocketpower who tells everyone about ancient Hawaiian secrets?
Yeah islander like Pacific Islander. Tito is actually a great example.
Yeah, all islanders have a super chill uncle, super proud of their heritage and will give you the shirt off their own back. Dunno what it's like in Hawaii but alot of the Pacific Islands are quite religious but in a let's see if we can out nice Jesus kinda way.
Pretty much. It’s a common term in New Zealand haha my bad.
I met his Dad once, it's very clear where he gets that energy from
He's also got that Iowa nice quality about him
“That’s okay, I’m kinda strong” is up there with wesley’s “as you wish”
That response makes me kind of teary. What a guy
I am not often one for hyperbole, but this is the single most badass thing I’ve heard this year, and maybe in the top 5 *ever.*
“I’m kind of heavy.” “That’s okay, I’m kind of strong.”
What’s the point of lifting all that weight every day for decades if not for this moment? If not to *literally and metaphorically lift someone up?*
I don’t subscribe to the whole “alpha” thing. But with that said, this is some Superman shit.
I have (thankfully) never been seduced by the "alpha" thing. But Superman as a goal? Someone who is so sincere about helping everyone that his best dramatic situations are how he copes with the reality of not being able to help everyone? That's the kind of fairytale heroism I love. The kind of mindset that hears "I'm kind of heavy" and then says (in so many words), "I will still show you that you are worth effort and care."
"Sometimes I despair the world will never see another man like him".
If nobody's the Last Son of Krypton anymore, anybody can be the first child of the hope he had written on his chest.
“Judge a man not by his strength, but by how he uses his strength “
'Alpha isn't a thing, but awesome is.'
>'Alpha isn't a thing, but awesome is.'
Now this. This is the perfect response. Gonna use that when I need to. Thank you for that!
Reminds me of the story I saw here of the young woman who was a powerlifter.
She did it so she could take her disabled sister on hikes and shit.
Edit: Found it.
I'm crying fuck you
Why is my face leaking?
That's why I lift. I'm obviously nowhere near his size, but being able to pick people up for cosplay photos is a real cool secret ability.
Similarly I pick up nephews and can run them around
Happy cake day friend!
“What is the point of all those push-ups if you can't even lift a bloody log?”
"I can fix that" from Holes.
Yo Kissing Kate Barlow and Sam the Onion Man were my bisexual awakening.
He plays so confidently in holes but I can't imagine him as anything but gus from psych.
editing to add: HOLY SHIT
My mind is blown. I've watched Psych multiple times over and never realized this. Probably because I saw Holes far fewer times.
By the way, did you hear about Pluto?
you know that's right
Heard about Pluto?
That's messed up.
I would literally melt
Me too, and I'm a pretty strong guy myself.
For being Aquaman, this statement is *incredibly* superman. It's friendly, reassuring, and promises your safety in a way you didn't think possible.
Like though I'm more a batman fan, I've already got my perfect trilogy, and this is the kinda energy a new superman needs. And....I think people kinda need that now. They need hope when quite frankly everything seems hopeless, against a villain who is literally evil cause he's a billionaire who believes he owes people nothing.
Yep. I actually just said that lol. This is one of the most Superman things I’ve ever heard.
As my dad always said, the point of Superman is a story about a man strong and powerful enough to rule the world, except *it never occurs to him* —
— because he’s too good of a person.
Not a human, of course, but the most human out of all of us.
I've always liked the concept of Superman being a superhero who puts on the costume of a normal person in a world of people who put on a costume to be superheroes.
I'd love to see a superman struggling with putting on the guise of humanity because he knows that it would be easy to do anything he wanted, but he values human life so much that he finds it abhorrent to abuse his great power.
> I’d love to see a superman struggling with putting on the guise of humanity because he knows that it would be easy to do anything he wanted, but he values human life so much that he finds it abhorrent to abuse his great power.
You want Nic Cage as Superman, in a movie directed by Tim Burton then.
No, not the Kryptonite!
Strong guys don't really get to use strength in their day-to-day. Feels good when the rare opportunity arises.
Jason Momoa is an avid climber, probably because it allows him to use his strength a ton
Climber strength is the crazy sort of strength too. It's not something.you can get from weightlifting alone. It really takes a more full comprehensive approach.
Friends took me climbing. I'm not unfit. The next day I was hurting in places that I didn't think humans had muscles.
It happens during the first time i go to gym and believe me the muscles ached was so bad I had to skip school I occasionally do go to climbing but I am more of a hiker and camper but gramps was a beast to do that shiii at that age.
Climbing is more functional than weightlifting. You're actively using more muscles while climbing. It is also feels natural for a lot of people when climbing. Weightlifting is good and useful but climbing goes to another level. Plenty of lifters take climbing classes to improve their backs and arms.
I'm confused. Who's Wesley, and what does he wish?
Edit: If you see this, please don't respond. I have my answer now. It's from "the princess bride," and I should be ashamed of myself for having not seen it. Cool
It's okay that you don't recognize him. He's big into black masks because they're terribly comfortable.
Perhaps you know him by his Work Title: "The Dread Pirate Roberts"?
Impossible. The Dread Pirate Roberts has been terrorizing the trade routes for the past thirty years.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
>If you see this, please don't respond
As you wish.
Watch the princess bride. Your welcome in advance.
Well this is just INCONCEIVABLE.
Go watch The Princess Bride
Yeah, that almost made a 50 year old dude ovulate it was so sweet.
What a good dude. Everything I hear about him makes me like him more.
My uncle has worked on both Aquamans and knows him quite well. He talks really high of him, he’s apparently just a big kid but in a good way.
There are two Aquaman movies?
Second one comes out later this year.
Aqua man: the way of Avatar
Is that the one where he aquas on all the haters
It's the one where he says: "it's aqua time!"
I'm an Aqua Man, living in an Aqua Land...
Life under waaaterrr.... is like no ottttherrrr...
Yeah it’s just been delayed a few times now. Originally supposed to come out last month, now it’s sched for December this year.
I think it comes out this year
To go along with the big kid thing, I heard a story that when he saw the first test footage of Aquaman underwater for Justice League he picked up Zack Snyder in the air while yelling "That is awesome!"
Oh my god that’s fucking adorable
Arthur "Bruh" Curry, the Aquamensch
My favorite story about him is when he helped Emilia Clarke rcognize that she was being exploited.
I want the story to this, but not enough to Google it on my own. I call upon anonymous redditors to tell me what happened.
Edit: that was fast
Checked random google links and found [this](https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/jason-momoa-helped-emilia-clark-push-game-thrones-nude-scenes/)
> “It’s only now that I realize how fortunate I was with that, because that could have gone many, many, many different ways. Because Jason had experience, he had done a bunch of stuff before coming on to this, he was like, ‘Sweetie, this is how it’s meant to be and this is how it’s not meant to be, and I’m going to make sure that’s the way it goes. He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a human being. He took care of me, he really did. In an environment where I didn’t know I needed to be taken care of.”
What a fucking class act.
Who is this exactly? I'd like to know good people
Jason Mamoa, the current Aquaman. Played Khal Drago on Game of Thrones.
More importantly Ronon Dex on Stargate: Atlantis.
Don’t forget Spider from “Once Upon a Time in Venice”, it’s a movie with a naked Bruce Willis on a skateboard!
From what I've heard, basically the execs for GoT kept pushing for more and more nudity, more sex, basically to make it as close to porn as possible even though several actresses were super uncomfortable - like crying before, during, and after scenes. He argued against it.
Honestly, there was only one nude scene in the entire show that it could be argued needed to be there and presented as it was, and that was the scene after Danerys walks out of the ashes of the burial pyre. Looking at it in context of the story you get the shock of thinking "holy shit, she **is** fireproof".
And even that could absolutely have been shot from different angles and still had the same effect.
Exactly. Also, I could've done without seeing a fully grown boy breastfeed.
She didn't realize she would have to do nude scenes for the role and was forced to strip in front of the entire crew for them.
Momoa would say stuff like, "Can we get her a f\*\*\*ing robe? She's shivering!"
Wtf nude scenes in front of the entire crew sounds so cruel for anyone who would be uncomfortable in that scenario.
https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/jason-momoa-helped-emilia-clark-push-game-thrones-nude-scenes/ looks like he might be referring to this
Thank you. I was too lazy to even type out that stuff you did
Could you share some info ?
https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/jason-momoa-helped-emilia-clark-push-game-thrones-nude-scenes/ might be referring to this
I saw him while off-roading a couple days back. My little cousin started going crazy recognizing him, but he really kept his cool.
All the stories are true.
I bet Andrew Tate be so mad right now, oh wait, he's in jail. lol
He's mad anyway
I feel he gets slept on a lot when talking about icons of positive masculinity.
He’s basically buff tanned Keanu
And then be pseudo-cloned and killed for thousands of years.
And at one point, become a weaponized sex machine. Like literally.
Boy, those later novels really get kinda weird. But still better than the dreck Brian Herbert started churning out after his father’s death.
I was considering reading Brian's novels, but now I don't think I will. Thank you.
Dunes absolutely still worth a read and is considered one of the sci fi classics for a reason. It’s incredible and something you should read at least once.
it’s only after in the sequels it starts getting weird.
Oh, I've read all of Frank's Dune novels. I absolutely loved them. I was just on the fence about continuing on with his son's novels in the series.
They're mostly entertaining, but they lack the polish, vision, and suberb skill his father had.
While being saddled with the same awful name every time.
Wait, that's Ralph Wiggum.
Just remember someone out there named their kid Richard Dickerson. Dude was a cop and a politician.
I saw a Richard Head in a phone book in El Paso once...
I just always assumed since Dune takes place 8,000 years in the future and none of these people have ever actually seen Earth before that “Idaho” has probably become a family name to people who can trace their lineage there.
Kinda like how the name Smith comes from the profession.
Idaho the state notwithstanding...I like the name Duncan Idaho.
"What??? Duncan *AGAIN*?!!.... Goddamnit!"
Don't forget, he's going to have a VERY intense time climbing
I would argue it was more intense for the woman watching him.
I know late-Dune is known for being space weird
But i’m still trying to comprehend what the author thought when he wrote that
“Oh Duncan Idaho is so hot, to show that imma make a scene where he is climbing a cliff, while a woman watch intensely and orgasm by watching him”
God Emperor and beyond were strangely sexual, especially with the Honored Matres and the cat-person situation.
I met him once at a bar, and when my friends bothered him for a picture I made sure to stay away so as to not be a menace to his celebrity.
He saw me on the other side of the room and insisted I joined the photo.
That’s a good man if I’ve ever met one.
That was super sweet of him. It was good of you to be polite and gracious of him to realize that there was no way it’s what you actually wanted and insist you come over. What a good guy.
This is what I've always hated about seeing celebrities in public. People pester them for photos and you don't because it's polite and you just want them to be able to go about their day. But you still would've loved a photo :(
I'd believe it. My brother was already at the bar when Jason Mamoa sat next to him and his fiance during a convention. Just sat and talked. Gave my brother a poster since my brother knew him and was nice. Eventually the bar got swamped by convention attendees
I had a couple of friends in a rock band in LA about 15 years ago -- one of the band members was a friend of Jason's as well. The band was playing a gig at a small club and there were maybe 8 people at the show. We all get hammered and start an 8 man mosh pit in an empty little club. Jason full on knocked me on my ass ... and immediately helped me back up. We were laughing and spilling our drinks everywhere but there was no one in the club to get mad at us (other than the bartender). After our friends set ended we all rolled out (and I mean rolled) onto the street to smoke cigarettes and we all laughed our asses off. We were all of us 86'd from that club from that night on. Dude is a legit LEGEND.
Hey that's the guy from Stargate Atlantis! He's great!
I've never watched GoT or Aquaman so whenever I see posts of him my first thought is "wow Stargate is still a lot more popular than I thought it would be" lol Then I get a little bit sad because despite the rumors I doubt I'll see anymore new Stargate.
I am still upset about SGU. For me it was the most enjoyable one. Survival mixed with exploration and a crew forced to work together. Some aspects were less enjoyable but overall I loved it.
Well he has been doing a lot of work lately with a lot of the cast of Atlantis so....
Seeing the crew back together in SEE gave me an indescribable amount of joy. Edge of my seat yelling "LOOK! COL SHEPPARD AND RODNEY!! OMG!! DID YOU SEE THEM?!"
"who?" - wife
Same, but I do like the continuity of having they from stargate Atlantis play the king of Atlantis in another universe. Honesty, I was half expecting Aquaman to have a joke reference to Thor or Asgard but clearly taking about sg1s supreme commander Thor,"oh yeah I've heard of him, short guy right?, bald, kinda skinny, yeah, I heard he had a nice ship" just as a little dig to marvels character.
I must acquire one of these weapons for myself.
Then he became king. Dun dun duuuuun
My friend has met Jason Momoa before, he’s apparently just an incredibly kind dude in general.
he’s gonna be SO fucking good as lobo
He’s Lobo? That’s sick
It’s heavily rumored that he’s gonna be Lobo, since it’s his favorite character, he just posted a video saying he loves James Gunn after a meeting about the new DCU, and they look almost identical
No way really that sounds so sick, especially a James Gunn lobo movie
If he’s lobo and it’s not just a rumor it’ll be absolutely legit. Seeing the punk rock space pirate in live action would be the best
If they don't make the lobo movie rated R. Then they are just failing at doing things differently
We call that a mensch.
I'm not usually a fan of billboards, but I saw one recently that said to Google what "mensch" means- then become one.
"a mensch is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being 'a real mensch' is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous." The term is used as a high compliment, implying the rarity and value of that individual's qualities."
Oh, I wish you included the Jewish history of the nomenclature!
“Mentsh”, the Yiddish term, translates to “honorable person” that comes from several different words in German; mensch, mensche, mennisko, etc.
Yiddish is a combination of Hebrew and German.
Yiddish originated in the 9th, 10th, or even 12th century depending on who you talk to… and actually is named after the German word for “Jewish”.
Yiddish colloquialism has made its way into every day language thought it’s often passed over of Germanic origin.
Our Jewish Brethren are frequently erased despite our vast affects on history!
Please share when it calls for it and when you can ❤️
>Yiddish is a combination of Hebrew and German.
I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
Mensch is german for human (so unfortunately not the humbling meaning it apparently ~~originally had~~has now in english (thx u/calliope719).
Part of it survived in "menschlichkeit", which means to be kind, have human dignity to others.
I really like the meaning of the english (jiddisch) Mensch, not such a word in german (Nobel or Ritter maybe, but both have - in comparison to "mensch" - a deprecatary touch).
> (so unfortunately not the humbling meaning it apparently originally had).
That's not the original meaning. The German one is.
The Yiddish meaning is the newer one.
My Gramma was a "ww2 bride." Gorgeous woman in her teens and early twenties; tall, slender, dark eyes and dark hair, growing up in Antwerp/the Flanders (region extremely sympathetic to Nazis, even today). We were told stories of her seducing Nazis in order to smuggle supplies through checkpoints. She even told us grandkids about hearing the bullets whiz past her head on at least one occasion.
The only way to aggravate the woman was to say the word "German." She would get inexplicably angry lol, called them "pizzants" with of bunch of other foreign words.
Anyway she lived out the rest of her years in Kansas, relatively peacefully, with her family and legacy firmly intact.
I have a lot of questions about her short time in Europe, unfortunately the time to ask passed almost 20 years ago. But the fact that she spoke more Yiddish than Flemish when she was angry has always stuck out to me.
Edit: and within -2 minutes u/wolkenbaer adds *premium context* lol
Yiddish was my grandparents’ native tongue and I still yearn to know more of it because it’s such a great language.
Did you know Leonard nemoy recorded several Yiddish folk song albums? I’ve not listened to many because I don’t understand it but I’ve always thought it was a neat thing he never got much recognition for.
It's on duolingo now!
in germany, we do too, just as the other 8 billion on the planet
The bestest mensch
Oh, that would be so cool if places had platforms to help raise a person up for a picture.
Not to hide their accessories, but just something like a 2 foot tall platform (with proper ramp and such) so people in the picture can be closer together.
Some cosplay shoots do have risers for that reason.
I don't even know how you'd go about asking someone in a wheel chair if they didn't want the wheelchair in the shot
Yeah, that seems very difficult. Maybe there was an obvious height difference that made framing the photo difficult, and he asked if she would like him to get down low or to help her stand?
Be strong enough to hold others up with your own strength.
101 on being a good human.
Seems like he deserves his positive reputation. I’m glad.
>I am kind of heavy
>I am kind of strong
Absolute geezer 🍻
Not only is he hot, but he’s caring- MY FRIENDS NEED TI STOP HATING ON HIM
Your friends hate on Jason Momoa? Why? I’ve literally never heard a bad thing about the man
What could they hate about him?
Likely because he's hotter and more caring than them
Get new friends. Tell them the internet told you to.
If Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves approached a door together, who would go first?
Momoa would punch a new door. Then they’d go through their respective doors at the same time, but Keanu would come back to sweep up the mess and dispose of it in a proper container.
Jason Momoa would pick him up and carry him over the threshold.
Are you kidding?! The door opens itself out of the radiating kindness.
The universe would implode.
Have they ever been on screen together?
I wanna say no, only because I would be sad that I missed it.
Don’t be sad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bad_Batch_(film)?wprov=sfti1
I don't think they are ever on screen together in that! He never enters the city of comfort.
We were so close :(
The way I would send this out as my Christmas card every year until the end of time
He once became best friends with a boy who had a terrible disease and skyped with him and all these things everyday in his free time. He made the boys last days better.
One time at a comic con, during peak the walking dead popularity, I ran into Robert Kirkman just walking around. We stopped him and talked to him and asked him to sign our books. I apologized foe bothering him and before I could even finish my apology he cut me off and said it wasn't necessary and that me, and people like me, have given his family everything they have, he was eternally grateful to us and signing our books was the least he could do.
He truly meant that because after a panel he set up a table impromptu and didn't leave until everyone there had an opportunity to meet him and get an autograph or picture, or whatever.
I truly admire public figures that realize we make their life possible and give back.
That’s awesome! What a special moment for you. And you look beautiful in that photo!
Everyone knows this guy is a total and complete bro of the highest and most positive level.
Wish him every success.
I thought that was Steven Seagal at first and this was an old pic. I was thoroughly confused for a few seconds.
Fuck no. Nobody thinks anything nice about that fat blob nowadays. Except putin
We shall add him to the pantheon of wholesome actors alongside keanu reeves
Keanu Reeves, Viggo Mortensen, and Robin Williams.
It makes me very happy to know he's legitimately a good dude.
I seriously love how every story about Jason Momoa is of him being an absolute stand up dude.
Few ppl I started appreciating more after reddit: Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, John Cena, Henry Cavill, and Brendan Fraser.
Edit: Forgot Fred Rogers.
"That's okay, I am kind of strong."
Right. In. The. Feels.
Daenerys was basically sold to him... lmao
Yeah Khal Drogo is objectively a bad guy. He’s basically Genghis Khan. Jason Momoa seems to be a much better person than Khal Drogo
Yeah, in the book it's much more explicit, but even in the show, she basically decides to seduce him so he'll stop raping her. It works and then they build a more equitable partnership.
**Not that this should reflect on Momoa in any way**, the guy is a treasure that must be protected at all costs. Just saying, citing that fictional "romance" as evidence... maybe not the best way to convey this.
And that his character rapes Danaerys. What a creepy, weird title.
We, as Redditors, tend to fall to pieces over the likes of Henry Cavill & Keanu Reeves. We should keep doing so, but I see absolutely no reason Jason Momoa shouldn’t be part of this pantheon.
Quick reminder that The 1st thing that let Daenerys fall in love was that he asked for consent. Unlike in the show.
I wish I was “kind of strong” too.
Our Polynesian brethren Jason and Dwayne are really representing for their side. Big dudes with big hearts.
